ABOUT BETHESDA

Bethesda is a local church drawing people from Winterbourne and Winterbourne Down to encounter Jesus.

We seek to be a place of Welcome for everyone - whatever your story and wherever you are in life.  We also welcome God's presence among us - strengthening us, challenging us and making us more like Jesus

We seek to be a place of Worship for everyone - a place where everyone can respond to God's greatness and goodness.  We worship by singing and serving, by giving and praying.

We seek to be a place where young and old can be transformed by exposure to God's Word, the Bible.  The Bible is read and taught on Sundays and at midweek groups

We we seek to be a place of Witness - a place where we are encouraged to share what God has done in our lives and a place to hear how others are serving him around the world

Why 'Bethesda'?

The name 'Bethesda' is taken from a place in Jerusalem mentioned in the Bible.  In John's gospel chapter 5 we read about Jesus healing a man at the pool of Bethesda, a name which means 'House of Grace' or 'House of Mercy'.  Grace and mercy are two sides of the same coin.  The bible teaches that because of God's mercy we don't get what we deserve - separation from God - and because of God's grace we instead do get what we don't deserve - eternal life with Jesus.

So 'Bethesda' reminds us that we are to be a place of healing, a place where people can encounter Jesus, a place of mercy and a place of grace.
